CHARLIE & ALGERNON
Our first production in this, our 21st anniversary year, is Edward Albee’s extraordinary drama WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?- a dryly humorous, emotionally gripping study of a relationship that will have you on the edge of your seat.
We are fortunate in having four very fine actors to play the roles in this exciting piece: Karen Gibb is stunning as the formidable Martha (you saw her last year in BOSTON MARRIAGE); Murray Burt is a revelation as Nick, the new Prof. on campus (you saw him last in CHARLEY & ALGERNON); Rebecca Murphy is memorable as his frail wife (you saw her last as Marilyn Monroe in THE WHITE WHORE AND THE BIT PLAYER). And we welcome back from Melbourne Phil Lambert (our Prospero 1995, Eliot in PRIVATE LIVES 2002, Det. Schrank in NQOMT’s WEST SIDE STORY) in the part of George, the long-suffering husband who is more than a match for Martha.

Who's Afraid Of Virgina Woolf?

Edward Albee’s play took Broadway by storm in the sixties and has reverberated round the world ever since. There are no fewer than four professional productions of this play in Australia this year – ours is the first, at the end of March (28 – 31), then Company B in Sydney (Aug 4 – Sept 16), then the Melbourne Theatre Company (Aug 17 – Oct 6), then the Queensland Theatre Company (Oct 4 – Nov 3)
What is it about this Albee play? Better come and see for yourself…!

21st Birthday Launch
|
|
|
With support from Townsville City Council we were able to deliver a stylish media launch for the 21st Birthday Season at the Perc Tucker Gallery. We had over 80 people present, including Mayor Tony Mooney who launched the Season for us, and representatives of several of our major sponsors. Pictured is Merv Sharkey from Xstrata with Artistic Director, Jean-Pierre Voos.

The Company has already been out and about in North Queensland this year. Madonna Davies has been working with the communities in the Dalrymple Shire and this will translate into applications for support under the Regional Arts Development Programme for a range of activity later in the year for many of Dalrymple’s smaller communities.
Susan Prince has been working in the Gulf and the north western Tablelands regions under the Auspices of Education Queensland’s Priority Country Area Programme. She has been working in small and remote schools helping them all prepare for the Regional Schools Eisteddfod which takes place 17 th March We hope to have some pictures on the website shortly from these residencies.
Closer to home base, Company members have entertained new students for JCU’s Orientation Week, performed at the Townsville Arts Awards, and delighted families at the first of Sun Metals two family days. The pictures depict Kate Hooper and Matt Hetheringon as “Red Nose Clowns” and John Lorraway as a traditional “Jester Clown”.
