Oedipus The King

"I went to The Old Magistrates Court Theatre to see Tropic Sun's Oedipus The King and didn't understand a word.

I wasn't meant to - the dialogue was in ancient Greek. Most importantly I didn't need to as this play was so splendidly realised the impact of this classic tragedy was quite profound.

True to classic Greek Drama, artistic director Jean-Pierre Voos used some ingenious character masks with which the actors managed to create remarkable personality changes.

The 21 characters in the play were played by seven cast members.

As well as turning in a very fine performance the cast provided the music and sound effects that was so essential to the mood of the play.

Congratulations and thanks to Tropic Sun, Jean-Pierre Voos and the great cast for an absolutely outstanding theatre experience."
DJ Aylward

"Congratulations to all for a wonderful night of theatre. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many people indicated that they would have liked to have seen it a second time -myself included. I hope there will be a return season."

"A delightful endeavour into an untapped mode of presentation and performance."
Nathan.

"Well done, kept me enthralled the whole time."
Jenelle D.

"Brilliant! All the hard work was well worth it!!"
George L.

"Would like the big action to continue through the text. Easier to understand action. Great masks.Simplicity loved, ideal."

The Dresser

"Excellent - Full of well drawn emotional twists."
Todd B.

"Norman, played by Bill Munro, is a dresser devoted to the brilliant but overbearing actor-manager Sir...... Optometrist-by-day Bernie Lanigan takes on the role of Sir, The tyrannical actor-manager of the troupe of Shakespearean actors....

Once Lanigan's unhinged Sir takes the stage, the play really started to fire as the releationship between Norman and Sir comes to the fore.....

Munro really shines in the storm scene of King Lear - his mad charge from the kettle drum to the thunder sheet earnt a hearty round of applause...

Special mention to the set design of Bradley Craperi who cleverlyworks the space to encompass both the scenes on stage and backstage"

"CONGRATULATIONS to the Director, Cast and Crew of THE DRESSER. Last night’s performance was stunning. I was rapt.

Cheers for the rest of the season."

Othello

"Not being a real Shakespeare fan, I was astonished with my delight in Othello. I actually understood what was going on AND being said! So inspired, I went straight out and bought the boxed set of the BBC Shakespeare series, recently aired on the ABC. A Shakespeare fan is born. Thank you."
Jo Ann Resing

"On behalf of the Zonta Club of Townsville Metro, I would like to extend my thanks to you for allowing our club to attend a performance of Othello as a club fundraiser.
I think our members enjoyed the evening imensley. Othello was a powerful piece, and the whole cast and crew involved should be congratulated on their excellent work.
It is wonderfull to know that such talent exists in Townsville. We look forward to attending further Tropic Sun performances in the future."
Zonta Club of Townsville Metro

"A Good actor evokes strong feelings in the audience. And I was ready to punch Othello's villian Iago if I got close enough. He was played by Andrew Hale, and I hated the man with a passion. That's when I realised what a good actor he was......
Hale was fantasically manipulative as traitorous Iago, and veteran actor, musician and film-maker Tom E. Lewis was compelling as the play's namesake."

Thank You Tropic Sun

"Dear Jean-Pierre and Lorna,
I'd like to thank you both for taking me on board for work experience. I have taken a lot of notice of what goes on in the administration area of theatre; and I've learned that theatre is not just costumes, lights and performance.

I now have a greater appreciation for theatre and the business and people behind it.

This week has helped me to determine what I would like to study towards in the future. You have both given me advice on how I can get to where I hope I end up, advice which is greatly appreciated."

Bombshells

“Bombshells is the final production and the best, in Tropic Sun’s Season of solo shows…. Townsville-trained actress Madonna Davies moves effortlessly between the four characters, easily capturing the different stages of womanhood…..Without a doubt, Davies’ portrayal of Meryl Davenport is the most hilarious … as the guilt-ridden mother of three young children. The Set design by Bradley Craperi is a delight, … Bombshells is another example of the skill of director Jean-Pierre Voos, leaving little doubt the season of solo shows has been a triumph for Tropic Sun.”

His & Hers

"What an amazing concept, how enjoyable."
Janine S.

"Thanks guys! The set was beautiful, should do it more often! .... please"
Erwin C.

"Nude models, visual artists, musicians and actors - the latest production for Tropic Sun will be a multimedia affair.
Dynamic and ambitious in it's concept, His And Hers is an interactive visual, musical and theatrical performance based around a nude life drawing class."

"The idea is that the audience can either sit at tables, have a drink and watch the whole spectacle, or they can sit in an easy chair behind an artist and watch what they are doing"

Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?

"Spiteful, ego-driven, angry and scathing.

These four words perfectly describe the marriage of George (Phil Lambert) and Martha (Karen Gibb) In Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? currently being staged by Tropic Sun Theatre.......

But for me, it wasn't so much the harrowing script as the ensemble acting that stood out.

Gibb and Lambert provoke outstanding performances from each other as the sparks fly, while Burt and Murphy are no less impressive in their roles as emotional foils."

Constance Drinkwater

"Set in northern Queensland around Federation, “Constance Drinkwater and the Final Days of Somerset” is witty, surprising and chilling.

The sense of isolation and desperation for those early settlers, as well as the gothic nature of the tale: both appealed to me very much. The story unwound in a way that made sense of what had come before. It was very clever and engaging.

A fabulous performance and a terrific night out."
Sandra H. (Cairns performance)

A Stretch Of The Imagination

"Goodson's performance is so engaging, the audience is eager to follow as he acts out Monk's past exploits. He completely cues the audience to move from past to present throughout the play.

And as a young man Goodson keenly embraces the physicality of the worn-out body of Monk.

Set design supervision by Bradley Craperi readily evokes a tumbledown bush shack just right for Monk's twilight years, his home just as run down as his body.

This production of A Stretch of the Imagination is a credit to Tropic Sun Theatre."

"John Goodson in A Stretch of the Imagination by Jack Hibberd.

It has some strong language as well as lots of laughs and it's only on until Sunday when a 5:00pm show will be the last. You'll kick yourself if you miss it, so don't take the risk"

Zim-Zoom Cabaret

"I went Sunday and I have to say I've never seen anything quite like it, or anything quite a much fun. I don't want to give too much away, as part of the fun is working out what's going on, but rest assured you'll have a fantastic night"

"I am glad my Dad brought me to see this. It was awsome."
Jake L.

"So when I heard Tropic Sun's latest offering the Zim-Zoom Cabaret involved crowd participation I almost decided not to go.

But I am glad I did.

The show, at the Old Magistrates Court, reminded me of the game of theatre sports. The actors weren'tin control of the show and had to react to what the audience wanted

It was completely unpredictable, hilarious and there was always something new going on to keep you entertained".

Charlie & Algernon

"Just a quick note to say how much my class enjoyed the show. My students were very amazed at the fact that they were kept entertained for nearly two hours by just one guy on a stage with very little setting.

Monologues are very difficult to perform well, and I can honestly say that this is one of only two monologues that I have seen performed well. My congrats to Murray Burt for an enthralling performance."
