Tropic Sun enlists a number of locally trained (James Cook University) actors of considerable promise. As an ensemble they consititute the only theatre group of its kind in the country that develops its skills together on a daily basis while also rehearsing plays. Importantly, sharing among themselves the various duties in running the business. The Ensemble presents four major shows a year (including a play by Shakespeare) and some nine or ten short plays in a wide variety of smaller venues.

The actors' experience of touring with plays and conducting workshops themselves contributes greatly to the mastery of their craft, while they enjoy further professional development by participating in the special skills workshops of the visiting Queensland Theatre Company members.
