Tropic Sun Theatre Townsville

"The company takes audiences on a journey that challenges the expectations of regional
Australian theatre, by creating a visual, sonic theatre, that embraces "now" media.
Along the way we discover, employ and train regional arts professionals."

TLC

TLC

It was established in 2001 with the aim of creating a repertoire of short plays and monologues that can be presented in a variety of locations.

Since its inception, TLC has performed over a dozen plays in a variety of venues including art galleries, (Pinnacles, Perc Tucker and Umbrella), cafes, (Blue Bottle, the Prawn Stop and La Bamba), nightclubs, (Club Millennium and The Exchange Hotel).

"They tend to the shoe-string end of the spectrum, plays are innovative and challenging, maybe at times provocative.

Audiences are expected to use their imaginations in the place of expensive sets, to put some energy into the play - to treat it as a totally different experience from, say, watching a film.

Going to see a TLC play is a bit like walking the Sydney Harbour bridge in a team. It's taking a group risk, albeit a managed risk.

Complete strangers in the audience feel that they've got something in common with other audience members, because they've been through a stimulating experience together.

Complete strangers in the audience feel that they've got something in common with other audience members, because they've been through a stimulating experience together.

It may simply be they've experienced a play in a curious venue, such as a multi-storey car-park (Uncle Scorpion) or in a café, where the play's action takes place between the tables and the bar (Daddy's Girls) while the audience sips its café latte."

Ticket prices do not cover the cost of productions. Many members of the public have no idea how much performances cost - rehearsals, costumes, lighting, props and so on. Not to mention the skills of the director. Ticket prices barely cover labour."

"Going to see a TLC play is to support the Australian actors and playwrights of the future, as well as to plug into some unconventional, stimulating, even confrontational theatre. When you come out at the end you'll know you've been to a play."
