OUTSIDE LIVES
by John du Feu
Directed by Jean-Pierre Voos
A serious comedy for North Queensland
with music by Mark Shortis
QUEENSLAND MUSICAL PLAY
WORLD PREMIERE
Rural life is not what it used to be - and the difference is killing
people. When Agnes returns from the city to her hopelessly dysfunctional
family in NQ., she wants answers. Why did her brother die? Why did nobody
tell her about it? Why haven't her parents spoken to each other in twenty
years? Why is her boyfriend suddenly becoming Aboriginal? N0-one wants
to say anything but Agnes is not the girl to take silence for her answer.
Before the tangled histories are unravelled, her world will turn upside
down and her family will finally understand that silence never was a solution.
Funny, honest and original, OUTSIDE LIVES is based on the playright's
talks with families and workers in many North Queensland communities.
Directed byJean-Pierre Voos, it features four great new songs with music
by distinguished local professionals together with the remarkable Aboriginal
actor, Ben Graetz who was recently with the Sydney Theatre Company and
previously toured Townsville in 1999 in the Bell Shakespeare Co. playing
Romeo.
With assistance from both Arts Queensland and the Theatre Fund of the
Australia Council, this entertaining production ,makes a powerful and
moving statement about our region and about Australian rural life at the
turn of the millennium.
