Some delicate brain surgery coupled with enzyme treatment have resulted in the remarkable rise in intelligence of a little experimental mouse – Algernon.
Now the scientists, in their rush to fame, decide to apply their astounding technique to a human being. They carefully select an amiable, mentally retarded young man – Charlie Gordon - on whom to apply their experiment.
The play tells the story from Charlie’s viewpoint as he documents his exceptional progress from low IQ , through ’normality’, to the level of veritable genius, all the while keeping an eye on his immediate predecessor, Algernon.
When he acquires super-intelligence Charlie stumbles upon a flaw in the scientists experiment. Before long Algernon begins to deteriorate. Can Charlie use his amazing knowledge to set things right, or is he bound by the same fate as his little companion?
